COPY Superintendents Office, Wellington 16th Decr. 1861 Sir, The Colonial Secretary in a letter received by the last Mail has informed me that Mr. McLean has been instructed to investigate the charge preferred by certain Natives at Porirua against Mr. Searancke, in regard to Stevens land, and has requested me to associate with Mr. McLean for that purpose some officer of the Provincial Government. As the duty of Mr. McLean and his associate will simply be to take all evidence which may be offered on the subject, and to report it for the consideration of His Excellency's Government, I have the honor to request that you will have the goodness to undertake the duty.
