. Turanganui December 14th. 1868 Sir, I have the honour to forward you two letters (from Officers under my Command) relative to the report that Ngatiporou was compelled to retire, from want of ammunition and rations. I may state that 8,000 rounds of rifle ammunition had been sent up by me on the day previous to Ropata's engagement; and this was available for Ngatiporou, who retired. Mr. Gascoigne informed me by letter, from the seat of action, that Ngatiporou advanced with 3 days' provisions= and yet we hear it stated that they were compelled to retire (the day after) from want of food, I am, Sir, Your most obedient servant. (Signed) Chas. Westrupp, Major. To:- His Honour Donald McLean Napier.
