Hamilton 12th. August 1869. My dear McLean, I have thought it best to send you, direct, the accompanying; sending copy also to Pollen, in Auckland. I really believe that Government ought to send someone whom they can trust to keep a watchful eye on the movements of the Waikatos. They seem to be very unsettled; no planting, or cultivating going on, or any talk of it; and all their stock of food for this year, expended, by their numerous visitors of late. I would undertake to get all the information from above, of what is going on; but cannot, and carry out my duties in the district also, not being allowed a competent clerk. Captain Young is still at Ngaruawahia, but I expect him to dine with me on next Sunday. The panic in the district has died out; but I fear that it will take time to restore confidence. Yours faithfully, in haste, (Signed) William N. Searancke. To:- D. McLean Esq. Wellington.
