(Copy) Mission House, New Plymouth, Jany. 26th, 1847. Sir, On behalf of the Wesleyan Missionary Society - I beg to lay before you the copy of a letter addressed to the Rest. Agent of the N.Zealand Company and of his reply thereto, in reference to our Mission land in this settlement, and to request your official interference in the matter, according to the provisions of the "Native Land Purchase Bill". Acting on the advice of the Resident Agent, I caused a notice of Ejectment to be duly served upon the man Loveridge in Octr.last, the only effect of which was, that he became doubly diligent in turning up the soil, and in sowing his crops - In this, he was urged on by Mr.W. Carrington, and the Native "Bob" - A plot of ground (about 1/2 an acre) which I had laid down in grass and clover, he maliciously hacked up and sowed with wheat, leaving other cleared land in the immediate neighbourhood, to lie fallow. Although he then declared to me that he had entered into a lease for the land (about fifteen acres) on behalf of his son, yet he has now the hardihood to say that he never once thought of making such an agreement - This, I presume, he has recently been advised to say, on discovering that that agreement was illegal. In consequence of his thus seizing on the only spots of cultivated land which had hitherto supplied the wants of my family, I have been unnecessarily obliged, at a great expense, to enclose and clear a piece of ground on this side of the creek. I have therefore, in conclusion, to request your interference in this case, so far as to prevent our original title to the land in question from being damaged by the intrusion of others, and that, on the arrival of the Governor, you will please to lay the affair before His Excellency's attention, that a proper, and final arrangement may be made. As Loveridge appears to have been urged on throughout the whole affair by designing men-(though his own conduct has been very censurable) I trust he will be allowed to take his present crops from the land, save such part of them as will cover the expenses arising to me, from his unwarrantable intrusion - I have the honor to remain, Sir, Your obedient Servant, (Signed) H.Hanson Turton.
