Taranaki, New Plymouth, February 5th, 1847. Sir, I have to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 26th ult. requesting my interference under the provisions of the Native Land purchase Ordinance (Sessions 7 No.19) to prevent the occupation by a European named Loveridge of aportion of land claimed by the Wesleyan Mission Society together with copies of your correspondence with the Resident Agent of the New Zealand Company relative thereto. In reply I beg to inform you that previous to your application I advised the European against leasing the said land from the Natives, and since the date of your letter I again called on him and warned him against a further continuance of his operations there on which warning I have reason to believe he will attend to and not submit himself to the penalties of the Ordinance by his ill advised and obstinate intrusion on lands to which the Native right of leasing or disposal has not been in any instance recognised even though possessed by and reverting to them under Capt. FitzRoys arrangements otherways than the sanction of the Government and the New Zealand Company as having the right of preemption was previously obtained. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your Obedient Servt., Inspector of Police.
