Auckland 14th Oct. 1873 My dear Mr. McLean If the Government would desire German Emigrants of a good class I have an opportunity of being able probably to do a good deal in obtaining them also, as well as English and Scotch - a cousin of mine is married to Baron Poelnitz of Franconberg in Bavaria, who is hereditary Chamberlain to the King - they had often asked me to pay them a visit there, and I make little doubt, but that through their influence much might be done in directing part of the tide of Berman emigration to New Zealand, as I think it makes all the difference to an Emigration Agent, having the support of landed proprietors in the districts he visits - as I mentioned before to you my idea would be to have a payment of a certain sum for each emigrant sent, which I would be willing to receive in land, on the west coast of this island, the locality to be fixed by me now I am Yours very truly T. H. Cockburn Hood Northern Club
