Napier. 9th. August 1872. Dear Sir, I have to hand a letter from the coast. Mataahu Meeting went off quietly. There were there representatives of Whakatohia, Urewera, Ngaitai, and Turanga. I saw Tariha the other day. Speaking of the rumoured change of Government, he asked me if we could not protest against it. I told him that if the change did take place you would certainly remain in Office. Otherwise we should be fighting within three months after. He quite concurred with me on the matter, and said that Karaitiana had said he would upset the Government this time; upon which subject they had disagreed. This may be only jealousy of Tariha towards Karaitiana. I have the honour to be Dear Sir, Yours faithfully, (Signed) F.W. Porter.
