Hon. Mr. McLean to Wi Te Whero. Wellington. Sept. 6th. 1870. To Wi Te Whero, Friend, salutations to you. Your letter of the 23rd. August has been received, acquainting me of the return of Nini Kukutai from Te Kuiti, and also with news which he brought you. I am annoyed to learn that Manuwhiri has contradicted what he said to you, when you went to Te Kuiti, viz, - that a gathering should take place in Waikato. Nini Kukutai went to Te Kuiti of his own accord. He had no instructions from me to do so. I did not wish him to go and interfere with what you had settled. But don't you take any notice of Nini. I am aware that Manuwhiri's thoughts are correct; and therefore it is not desirable that any one who wants should go to Te Kuiti, and disturb these plans. That's all, from your friend (Signed) D. McLean.
