. Colonial Secretary's Office Wellington 2nd. October 1849. Sir, I am directed by His Excellency, the Lieut. Governor, to request that (if no cause of which His Excellency is unaware exists, to detain you at Taranaki) you will, , return to the Manawatu, to resume the negotiations upon which you were engaged. The New Zealand Company's Principal Agent has made repeated applications to ascertain if you had returned; and urged the necessity for bringing the important questions upon which you are employed, to a close. I am also instructed to observe to you that His Excellency has been in full expectation for some time past, of hearing that you had resumed your labours at Manawatu; and that several letters have been forwarded to you, having reference to that service; as having reference to that service, as well as to another upon which the Government are desirous of employing you.
