Jan. 3rd. 1847. My Dear Sir, I beg to thank you for your kind letter from Waimate, and am very glad for what you have done in the case of Mr.C. Brown's wahine. I was applied to about her, by the Natives themselves, some mths ago, and Mr. Woon has had no little trouble about it. I don't see that you cld. well have acted differently and you shall have my thanks, for acting thus. In my opinion, such connexions shld. be altogether forbidden by a Local Ordinance, under severe penalty. I rather think that Franc. Nearne has also a woman at a kainga, a few miles from Brown's place - at least he had, some time since. As to the "Rint", as O'Connell calls it, you can leave it until your return. I did not hear of the messenger until this morning, and as it is now the Sabbath evening, I am sure you will excuse more. We are all well at Ngamotu, and Mrs. T. and Ripi and little Taitana joins me in kindest regards. A Happy New Year to you. Yours truly, H. Hanson Turton.
