Woodlands June 7th 1863 My dear McLean I received your letter yesterday by Scully. I am pretty nearly right again, though a nasty cough still sticks to me and English says I must be careful. I start tomorrow for the Coast, and shall take either Hori or Renata Ropiha, or Kuru from Porangahau as temporary policeman. Perhaps the latter can be best depended upon if he can be got to go. I am very anxious to know what those Porangahau follows are doing and talking about, as I think if we ever are to have anything to look out for, it will be well to know what their movements and intentions are. Bo you think I wd. be allowed to establish a permanent Maori Policeman at Porangahau? Everything is very quiet here. I notice that the Maoris one meets talk in an open sort of way and have not the black, reserved, hangdog sort of look that they sometimes assume when sulky. I am not sorry to have missed Hitching's party - most likely I shd. not have been asked if I had been there. Mrs. Cooper got hold of your letter and is going to pitch into you for daring to insinuate that her husband flirts when away from home. Locke is spending the Sunday with me. I am very glad he is about here, and I hope you will continue to keep him at Waipukurau, at any rate till I return. You can't rely on Native news from anybody else. Faithfully yours G. S. Cooper
