Napier Aug. 3, 1868. Sir, I have the honor to inform you that nothing in extenso has occurred since my last report to Your Honor and Telegrams forwarded this day. The termination of the expedition seems at present to be that the Chatham Island prisoners have escaped to add an additional support to the Urewera Natives -- together with their loot and the glory of having defeated our troops -- people say if Your Honor had been here their escapade would have been frustrated -- and it is surprising what a want of confidence every one that has to do with Col. Whitmore feels in him. Your Honor will excuse this short report but your having all information by telegram curtails my source of information. I have the hr. to be Sir Yours most obt. svt. Geo. Thos. Fannin. If any information that I should telegraph to Your Honor prove not correct, You will pardon and place to my own anxiety the credit. His Honor The Supt. Wellington.
