'Te Huatu' Wairoa Sept. 20th 64 My dear Sir, I beg to enclose a letter from 'Ihaka Wanga' relative to the settlement of his business. He has handed over all the money entrusted to me to Messrs. Riddell upon terms arranged by them at 'Mahia' in the presence of a sufficient number of Witnesses to make the whole matter clear beyond dispute. I have no wish to make any further comment on the subject - other than that a little less hasty conclusion would have better served the purpose. There has been a murder committed by a portion of 'Kahu' who having determined that a certain native 'Tohunga Porohiwi' of 'Puwha nui' Wairoa should be put to death, deputed 'Parakete' and 'Hotene' to act as executioners - Hotene held the poor old man in talk, whilst the other shot him. Altogether a most cowardly and cold blooded murder - The whole tribe support them, and an attempt to arrest them would end in bloodshed. They have today saved perhaps much trouble by bolting, having gone to join 'Te Waru' - There is much disputing about the Land, and I do not think that the natives will come to anything like a perfect agreement for some time to come. I trust this business of 'Inakas' is now at an end as it has certainly already caused me enough loss and annoyance - He is receiving at the rate of 20 p. c. Int. per ann. for his money, and is I believe thorghly content and satisfied - I have the Honor to remain Your most obedt. servt. Geo. B. Worgan To Donld McLean Esq.
