Raglan 29th. Apr./71/ My dear Sir, I am sorry to say that I have been disappointed so far in reference to the Natives, most of whom have been away from home, on my arrival. On landing at Karakariki I found that Wiremu Patene had not returned fcom the front and Andrew Barton had just started to Hamilton, but on reaching Whatawhata, Hami and Moi were both away. But Hakopa te Kotuku was there on his way to Tamahere, and I shall see him on his return. This is one of the most reliable men in the Colony and the best affected. Dr. Harsant has sent over to Aotea for Hone te Hone to come and meet me here on Monday. Most of my old friends are dead and many of them within the past five years, and the children who are now rising up are not as their fathers were, either in spirit or behaviour. I feel the change to be very distressing. Please excuse the writing for I cannot get a good pen. Yours truly, in haste, H. Hanson Turton.
