They are all busy and prospering in the Driving Creek - 9 1/2 lbs. in one block, of quartz and gold. You know our requirements, so keep Pita up to the mark. They are now so avaricious that they will allow scarcely any advantage to us, without special utu but as the Diggings are eminently for their own benefit, every facility shd. be afforded by them to the strangers who came and wish to reside. If we are to be altogether under the power of these 1/2 doz. people at Kapanga, it will be insufferable to all concerned. I think you cd. manage it far best, if you were to come, and go over it leisurely. Indeed, if the arrangement he made in Auckland, it will not be satisfactory. You could stop at Downe's, and come here daily. It wd. not take you long. I was going to write an official to you, abt. it, but I think this will be best, and then you can provide for the roads bridges, horse sites etc. and alluvial diggings and Reserves. And after Pita is done with, then you shd. finish off with Kitahi and Puhata, or we shall have constant raruraru - as diggers will be arriving - before terms are made and provisions ready. Pita is so jealous of our people working on Kere's Reef (on the Govt. land) that he will not allow a dray an easy passage across the stream.
