Woodlands, April 30th 1863 My dear McLean, I will attend to Mr. Pehimana's letter when I go to Castle Point, though I hardly see my way clearly without a surveyor - besides, is it not in Mr. Commissr. Featherston's District? I shd. have been there and back by this time, having started from Porangahau on the 8th but when I got halfway to Tautane was met by the news that Sutherland had gone to Wellington. The Natives have now promised to send up for me as soon as he returns. I have heard the decision of the Executive privately from Ormond but am writing for an official answer from you. Weber's excuse about the diverged line going over hilly country is simply a , not touse a plainer term. However it is settled now, and though I lose about a couple of hundred pounds by acting as directed by Mr. Gill, it is of course no use to say any more about it, and I won't. I shall however when I have your official letter, apply for the right of pasturage over that part of the road wh. goes through my field so that I may erect gates across it, as the Russells, Newman, Williams and others have done. This is provided for by one of the Wellington Acts to wh. I have not now time to refer, but wh. I will quote in my application. All quiet here and no news. I shall see you in a few days. Faithfully yours G. S. Cooper
