Mokau May 26 /46 Dear Sir Poihipi from Mimi being here I send this to inform you of passing events. Tikaokao has returned from Kawhia, he was there 3weeks but Nuitone would not 'rongo'. Since then we have had such rains and floods as I have never before seen in this river and an immense quantity of eels intended for the ''Hui'', kua riro i te waipuke''. In consequence of this I have been requested to write to Kuri: ''Kua he te ma hi - kua ngaikare o matou ngakau - haere mai korua ko Hikaka (Taunui) anoke''. The Kanoe left yesterday. Mr. Whiteley is inland and may probably here to night, or as the natives think there is no Kanoe for him at Motukaramu - pieces having come down during the floods - he will have to wait until our Kanoe gets up wh. will take 3 or 4 days. Te Roto ma of Kawhia are at Waikato on the fighting ground I believe Mr. W. persuaded them to go without arms. A Letter calling on Nuitone, Ngamotu and others to follow - was given to Mrs. Whiteley - arrived here on Sunday night and yesterday I sent by the Kanae to to Mr. W. who is requested to make haste home and accompany them. By Rihia I wrote as you are aware to every one at New Plymouth whom I thought annoyed by the Tapu, stating that the way for letters was open and offering to forward all that might be sent to my care. On the arrival of the Ngatiawa's with Takupu and Tikaokao I was a little surprised that I heard nothing from i runga then ''kua he te pukapuka a te pakeha'' What that ''he'' can be I cannot imagine, as, to the best of my knowledge I wrote plain facts, to prevent misrepresentation and serve the people of New Plymouth. But as you then expected His Excellency I suppose the true cause of not writing was ''raruraru''. Taunui was sent for some weeks ago but could not come then having a ''hui'' inland. I believe the Tapu will be taken off tho' there be no ''hui 2 here. The old rogue however has something else in his head of which I was informed yesterday. Finding the tapu an unprofitable scheme he intends to wrest Urinui from the Ngatiawa, in order to satisfy his pride and avarice. I believe the plan is to take possession and then sell it to the ''pakeha'' if so, I am thinking he will be disappointed again as I believe it will be many years yet before the pakeha will ''aroha hi Urinui''. Tikepoti, who is quite as subtle tho' less powerful than Taunui himself, and I fear some others of this neighbourhood would cooperate with him. He talks of setting cumara there next season.
