No. 36 Oruanui Taupo March 15th 1869 Sir, I have the honor to send you the following report. I arrived here from Walhi with Te Heuheu this evening. My object in going there was to see Te Heuheu and the other upper Taupo chiefs and to know as much as possible about the meeting at Moerangi. Nothing has been done by this meeting up to this time, all the Taupo Hauhau are there and some from the direction of Whanganui, they are however waiting for the arrival of natives from Hauraki and Waikato. I shall return to Walhi in a day or so -- possibly with Te Heuheu. The report about Kereopa having crossed the Waikato near Waimahana is without foundation, the native here however are in a great state of fear without cause, at any rate at present. Of course there may be danger here soon but as long as Te Kooti is at the coast there will be no danger at Taupo. In the event of Te Kooti passing through the district of course the pakeha would have either to leave or muster at some native village. I will take care to warn them of any danger. The natives of Runanga received a letter from the Upper Taupo hauhau telling them that fighting had commenced at Waikato and that the king had raised his patu. I do not believe this about the king. Most of the natives that came to attend to the Land Court have returned to their homes, the remainder of them held a meeting this evening when they decided on staying no longer, without this is changed the court will break up tomorrow evening. As I said before I dont think that there is any danger but the natives think differently or pretend to do so. I wrote you a short report from Tauranga (wahi o Taupo) whilst on my way here. If you would let me have some means of communicating with you I should be very glad. I have the honor to be Sir Your obedient Servant Jno. St George His Honor Donald McLean, Gen. Gov. Assess, etc. etc. etc. Hawke Bay
