Raglan 2nd. May /71. Dear Mr. McLean, As the mail has not yet closed I write another note to say that Hone te Hone and Kawhene arrived to see me last night in due course. They seem glad that you have sent someone to visit them, and appear very well disposed towards myself. Indeed so much so, that if you were to desirous to appoint me as R.M. of this District, I think I shd. accept it at once for a least a trial of 12 mos. In such a case I shd, leave my family at Parnell, and reside here myself as on a travelligg station. Being acquainted, more or less, with nearly every Native and European in the Dist. my rule here would be as much of a patriarchal character as magisterial, and that, it appears to me, is about the proper mode to adopt in a mixed community like this. I will not obtrude the subject or myself any further, but if you wd. like me to come and assist you in this part of the Province, in the capacity of Rest. Mag. you have only to obtain my appointment, before you leave for Wellington, and I will be ready to return and carry out your Instructions, as soon after my arrival in Auckland. as possible. My notice to that effect, if addressed to Hamilton or Te Awamutu wld. probably find me on my arrival at either of those places. I expect Gibson will have arrived in Auckld. during the past week, when he would be sure to call upon you. Believe me Yours very truly, H.H. Turton.
