Letter from Sir George Grey, to Donald McLean Esq. dated 20th. March 1856. Government House, Cape Town, 20th. March 1856. My dear McLean, As I have an opportunity of writing to Auckland, I must send a few lines to you. I await with much interest what you are doing; I often think of you, and frequently long to be with you, - my heart, in spite of myself, wandering back to New Zealand, - its rivers, lakes and mountains. How is your child? How is Strang? Write and tell me all the news you can. Pirikawau is going back again. I am sorry he leaves me. Will you do what you can for him? I send a whole number of letters for my old friends, various native Chiefs. Will you have them delivered for me. I love the Maori race much. Say therefore many kind things for me, to those I know. You must not forget my White friends also. I have plenty of work to do here, - much more than in New Zealand. The Kaffirs are a fine race, - black, with ugly features, but with splendid figures; and I think that much may be done with them. Lady Grey desires her kind remembrances. Give mine to Strang when you see him, and believe me, - My dear McLean, truly yours, (Signed) G. Grey. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
