Hokianga. June 21st. 1871. My dear McLean, I have this moment received a letter from Maihi Paraone Kawhiti, to say he will do everything and anything in the Waikato affair, if the other Ngapuhi Chiefs agree; and at same time I have received a letter from a Chief, who is one of my who principal agents, to say that all the highest Ngapuhi Chiefs, and everybody, are signing the letter; and that it has been sent to every corner of the Ngapuhi territory, and will be sent to me as soon as complete. Te Wake called on me yesterday with a present of a great heap of fat pigeons. Unluckily I was not at home. I suppose the present was explanative of peace and good will unto men. Anyway, we are eating the pigeons. When I see him next, I shall see and persuade him that the at Auckland are not dangerous. Yours ever truly, (Signed) F.E. Maning. Excuse haste, post leaving. (singed) F. E. M. To:- Honble. Donald McLean Defence Minister. Wellington.
