Wellington 20 Sept. 1870. My dear Parris, I was very glad to get your Telegram by way of Patea and to hear that matters were going on quietly at Pariaka. A telegram sent to Colonist from Taranaki gave rather an alarming account of the state of affairs and the writer said also that you had no instructions with reference to Titoko Waru I would make no concessions, if he chooses to remain quietly in the Ngatimaru country we would not trouble him but it would not do for him to return to his old haunts. Of course we have no desire for renewing hostilities and you must make the best of circumstances as they arise leaving any difficult question for the decision of the Govt. The Govt. is desirous of peace so long as it is not of an humiliating character. Use the telegraph freely by way of Patea and let me hear from you soon as to what can be done in the way of roads. Yours very truly, Sgd. Donald McLean.
