To:- D. McLean Wellington Sept. 22. 1868 Karauvia is again here and very importunate about arms. Asks to have some loose powder and caps for their guns if nothing else. Says that natives are alarmed at the reports about Ureweras very much and are mustering and cleaning arms. He says he will wait for an answer. I have told him he need expect no issue of arms from the store to any one yet until more definite news arrives of the enemy's movements. He says the woman Harata has not gone. Karaitiana would not let her and no other person has been sent. The widows from Tarawera have been removed by ex-prisoners that the road may be cleared. (Signed) J. Rhodes, To:- D. McLean Wellington. Sept. 1868 Karaitiana says he is going to muster all his men from Porangahau, Manawatu, and other places to consult on the present crisis and make sure who are loyal. The natives are clamourous for powder caps and guns. Karauna Pupu tipsy and inclined to be insolent. Refer to Mr. Stafford's telegram of this date for information about Paora Hapi and the movements of Karauria's people on to the confiscated land. (Signed) Joseph Rhodes.
