My dear McLean We have been expecting you every day for these last two months. I was much disappointed that you could not get in to the ball. I did not go. Perhaps had you been here you might have prevailed on me to go. I have a very bad cold but Papa and Susan went. It was a nice ball and my girl enjoyed herself much. I do not think that I would have written to you at this time but a rumour has got abroad in which you are somewhat connected. Mr Hogg sails today for Auckland and it is reported that a certain person of whom you have heard is coming from that quarter to take his place. All our friends are tormenting poor Susan about it and it is making her quite unhappy. I know that he has attempted more than once to send letters but they did not come here. If they had Susan would of course have returned them. She is sorry that this little flirtation ever took place and wishes to forget it as a piece of girlish folly. If you cannot come soon do write.
