AhuAhu, 26 June, 47. My Dr Sir According to your request I enclosed an Order for £20 in the letter you sent to me open - You had better not send me the cash just now but if Mr.Turton should apply to you for any please to let him have what he may require. I cannot now stay to write but must say one word They write me from Auckland that Government have sent out to Governor Grey directing him to take possession of all the native's land in the country except what they have in cultivation!! Now I dont think Governor will think of attempting so mad an act of injustice for this plain reason - that until the land is filled with soldiers from end to end it would be useless - but does not such an order on the part of the British Government amount to a against the New Zealanders? I think it does for sure enough they will never part with it by force but with their lives. This dark cloud protends dark days for N.Z. but we must hope. Dont talk about this to a single individual for the longer we can keep it from the natives the better I sincerely hope there may be some mistake. I am going to take up arms (per ink and paper) against the British on this subject and so much for my loyalty. But I must conclude. Yours in haste and affection J.Whiteley. Thanks for your letters do write me as often as you can and as copiously I am anxious to hear how you get on at N.P. and of affairs at Wanganui. P.S. Will you do me the favour to hand over to Capt. or Mrs.King two lemons plucked from our tree a few days ago as the first fruits of the season - simply as a specimen there are perhaps 20 others in different degrees of maturity but none yet ripe save these two. I sand them to you as being in the way and shall be glad if you will get Mr.King the baker to put a loaf into the tin for Mrs.W. charging Rihia to take charge of it I cannot write to Capt.King now as the Mail is off.
