October 1869 Sir, We have all heard and read with great pleasure your successful tour through the difficult Provinces; and when I heard of your being at Taranaki, and Mr. Richmond having such a small majority, I recalled to mind a remark made by Horea, sometime ago - ''Mr. Richmond better look after his election as Superintendent.'' So much for Mr. Richmond! The people of the Middle Island are in great glee at the sweep obtained over Te Kooti. I enclose a copy of the despatch, in case the particulars should not have reached you through other quarters. Mr. ----(?) has been elected 85 to Grindell's 51. Mr. Feilder goes to Invercargill; and some Southern Officers come up in place of Mr. Grindell. Mr. Hamlin to act as Interpreter at £50 per an. Mr. Ormond has removed into your house, and Miss McLean left for Mara this morning. Mr. Tiffen left on Monday morning last for Kaimanawa. He expects to meet Willy M'Donnell there to-morrow. We are anxiously looking out for news from Mr. Tiffen Renata, I hear, had his eye gouged out by a Hau Hau woman he attempted to take prisoner. She took the greenstone out of his ear, and then disarmed him, and said - ''Now you are my man.'' Poor Johny St. George, when he was struck, leaped off the ground about 1 foot, and fell flat on his face, but never moved. Another, a Wanganui Officer, (native) did not fire until he got up the pallisade. He fired, turned round, and said - ''I nailed him!'' With that he received a ball in his chest. One of the balls further up (fired from the enemy) had portion of a despatch, written from Mr. H.R. Russell to Col. Herrick, when he was at Waikaremoana. From this it must be judged that some portion of the Urewora, or Te Waru's natives, are still with Te Kooti. I send you enclosed the latest telegrams from Wellington. Mr. Ross has resigned. He intends going Home. Col. Herrick has withdrawn from active service, previous, I believe, to getting married. Te Heu Heu has given himself up, and is on his road down, in charge of Preece. He says, Te Kooti had the thumb of his right hand shot off, portion of his left hand blown off, and wounded through the side. He was not able to carry any arms; nor was he able to keep up with his people who were fleeing. This occurred in the engagement of the 4th. inst. Mail closing at once.
