Turanganui Nov. 10th. 1868. My dear Sir, This mail takes you very sad news. The Hau Haus have surprised Matawhero, and killed Biggs, Wilson, and some others. This is a sad blow, for there is no one now to take the lead. Henare Potae is here with a small force, and we shall soon have a number of people from the Coast. Two of the houses at Matawhero have been burnt; and how many women and children have been butchered, I cannot say. The Hau Haus are some of the escaped prisoners, as far as I can make out. They seem to have attacked Biggs' and Wilson's houses almost simultaneously, between 2 and 3 o'clock this morning. I mention all this that you may know how we are situated; and that you may act as circumstances may dictate. I remain, in haste Yours truly (Signed) W.L. Williams 8 a.m. To:- S. Deighton Esq.
