To:- Donald McLean Wellington. July 1868. following is a Copy of a letter received from renga 13th. July. "Turanga 13th. July 1868. Dear Deighton, The prisoners have landed at Whare-ngoangi, having escaped from the Chatham Islands, got the Volunteers and Maoris together, and we march-d to within a mile of their place, sent messengers to the pa to request them to give up their arms, ich they refused to do, I am not strong enough to attack them, we only mustering 120 Europeans and Maoris. They are 180 fully armed, having all the rifles from Wharekauri. The Hau Haus tied the guard there and came in a whaler and landed on Saturday. I send a vessel to Napier to-morrow. You must put all your natives on the look out to watch their movements. Yours truly (Signed) Reginald Newton Biggs." (Signed) S.T. Fannin.
