Wellington, 19th May, 1868. My dear Sir, We came back from Rangatikei last Week. Nine cases out of 10 remain yet unsettled - I am writing to Fenton about the Ahuriri Courts which have been as you are aware postponed - In the meantime I have to go back to Auckland by the first opportunity to attend a sitting of the Native L. Court at Kavaeranga and shall have to go by the West Coast to be in time - White of Monganui is going to Auckland via Napier next steamer, he intends to pay you a visit after he has seen his sister who is living somewhere in your neighbourhood Rolleston has gone South to become Supt. of Canterbury and will likely be in the House of R - s next cession. I am very dark about this Manawatu business not having been settled, but A. Hadfield and Tom Williams with others who have an interest in running sheep or cattle on the block would not allow the dissentient Ngatiraukawa's to agree to any terms except they get back the whole block I am glad the Govt. has refused to grant them a rehearing - I look forward with much pleasure to my trip to Napier. I met Carruthers on the wharf yesterday. He told me he saw you. The steamer was off before I could say much more than Tena Koe. I have been on the sick list for a long time and suffer from a pain in the left side. The cold does not agree with me. Halse is here. It is a mystery as yet whether he will hold the office vacated by Rolligston. Hoping you are in good health which is after all the main point - I am, Very truly yours, J. Rogan. D. McLean, Esq. Supt. Hawkes Bay.
