Wellington. 27th. May 1872. My dear Sir, It was with regret that I received from Inspector Scannell, the information of Te Kooti's escape to the King Country. Lately I have enrolled some very good men for the Armed Constabulary; but there are not many offering. Enclosed is a clipping from the "Wellington Independent" referring to the men of A.C. Could not Mair's and Preece's contingents be reduced at once to 50 men each, and Wi Maihi's force at Ohiwa be dispensed with. Things continue to work smoothly in Defence and A.C. Departments. Col. Harrington has gone on to Taranaki, to complete an enquiry begun by him some months ago. We are having unusually pleasant weather. I remain, my dear Sir, Yours very truly, (Signed) W. Moule. To:- The Hon. D. McLean C.M.G. Native and Defence Minister.
