Letter from P. Wilson to Donald McLean Esq. dated 12th. February 1857. Thursday 12th. February 1857 My dear Mac, The steamer is in, and I avail her ladyship to send a few hasty lines. When she last came, she brought with her, ; whose errand, it seems, was to make inquisitorial scenting into the character and conduct of our friend, Turton; who, it was alleged, was notoriously given to the sin of drunkenness! This startled all of us, who had for years been his sober associates; and finding that the acquisition based on an anonymous letter, we were reminded of the days of the Star Chamber, and of the most holy Inquisition. Ironside, we soon learned too, was the active abettor of this matter; and who, it seems, had known all about the insinuations for more than a year; without having the brotherly kindness to intimate to Turton a word till he got to Auckland; when at the district Meeting of the Wesleyans, he gave in formally the accusation. But I have no time this morning to do more than I have in the affair, so leave your mother to tell you all about it; and remain, with the further important communication, that we are looking hourly for the arrival of Moses, Duke of Argyle, and his daughter, Lady Louise; who were to start on Monday last, along with Peter Imlay for this place. very faithfully yours (Signed) P. Wilson P.S. Except that I am less expendatory of paper, this may seem, in point of matter, not unlike one of your own hasty productions. To:- Donald McLean Esq.,
