OBITUARY.

HON. THOMAS FERGUS. (Per Press Association). DUNEDIN, September 30. The death was announced .to-day of the Hon. Thomas Fergus. He was taken ill yesterday, and an operation was performed last night, but he died this morning. ' The Hon. Thomas Fergus was born at Ayr, Scotland, on April G, 1851; married, IS7B, daughter ' of Donald Reid; emigrated Melbourne; Otago 1870. Studied Otago University ;• 1872----76, district engineer for goldfielus under Provincial Government; in partnership with D. Henderson constructed Mos-giel-Outram railway, Patea- railway, New Plymouth waterworks, Bluff railway wharf; in partnership with J. B. Blair constructed Deloraine-Mersey railway, Tas.', and Heidelberg-Alphing-tou railway, Vie; member for Wakatipii, H.RA 1881-93; Minister, of Justice and Defence (Atkinson Cabinet) 1887-89; of Public Works and Mines 1889-91 : vice-president and chairman Otago Jubilee Executive Committee 1898 ; member Otago Education Board : director Kaitangata Coal Co., Hartley and Riley Co., Westport Coal Co., etc.; member of firm D. Reid and Co.; accorded title Honourable 1891; vice-con-sul for Argentine. ,
