A farmer who lives near, the banks of the Selwyn River wrote to the Christchurch Automobile Association, moro in sorrow than in anger, drawing attention to the treatment which ho had received from a motorist whose name he was not sure about. It seems that the farmer is frequently called upon to assist motorists who get stuck up in the river, and at their call he leaves his work and, with the aid of. his horse, draws the machines to dry land. This assistance is usually recognised by the motorist handing over some coin of the realm. Some motorists, however, have not always ready cash with them, and the farmer, up to the present, has given them both assistance and credit. At last, however, he has been stung, and ho has resolved to adopt the rule of "no pay, no help." A young man was stuck in the river recently, and was helped outHe pleaded a ! shortage of cash and was given credit, the farmer trusting to his honour to discharge the debt. The motorist was even entertained at breakfast while his machine was being rescued. He had not kept his word to pay, and the farmer, having given. up hope of seeing either him or his money, has lost his faith in human nature, and is going to demand cash down in future. Tho association disavowed any knowledge of the offender, and strongly .reprobated his conduct as unworthy any decent motorist. • -
