There was great interest in the City West contest, although heavy rain interfered with the polling. Secular education had been made a test question on both sides, and although the constituency ia the strongest Roman Catholic one in the colony, the result was an overwhelming defeat for Dignan, who was a sunporter of Curtis's Bill. The following is the result of the City West election :— Goldie, secularist candidate, 77G Dignan, denominationalist, 261. Majority for Goldie,sls The Mayor forwarded by the mail £41 10» for tho City of Glascow relief fund. A fire at Opotiki destroyed the residenco of the Key. Mr. Gow, Presbyteriin minister. Tho furniture and library wero worth £300.
