—7—* T MR. THOMAS SHAILER WESTON. (Bj Telegraph. -Press- Association.' New Plymouth, October 15. The death is announced of Mr. T. S. Weston, Crown Prosecutor in tho Toranaki Judicial District for many years, at tho ago of 76. He was well known and a highly respected resident. At oho lime ho was District Court Judge. Mrs. Weston predeceased him three years ago. Ho leaves four sons, three of whom aro members of the legal profession. !■ [The late Mr. Thomas Shailcr Weston was born in London on June 7, 1830, and camo to New Plymouth with lus parents in 1850.. He was educated in private schools in London, and became a ljarrister and solicitor in. New Zealand in 18(31, 'arid practised in New Plymouth until 1863. The following year lie practised both at Invercargiil and Auckland, and in 1873 was appointed District .Tudgo at Napier. He'acted as District Judge at Westport a year later, and remained there for six years;' when he retired on compensation, under retrenchment policy. Ho again practised iii'ISSO to 1902 in Christchureli. In June, 1881, he was returned ot the by-election to. represent the Grey electorate, and at the. general election of the same year he represented Mangahua. Ho was twice'chairman of the North Canterbury Education Board, and from lS'Jt to 1902 he was a governor of the Canterbury College. For five years, from 1881, lie "was Law lixaminer'for the Whole Stale. In 1875 ho was appointed a resident -Magistrate. The late Mr. Weston was an active member of East and West Coast (South Island) Railway Leagues. In 1863 ho was retained by the Government to defend a Maori charged with the murder of Dr. Hope and Lieutenant Trogett (prisoner's sentence of ; death afterwards commuted). Two years later he was retained to defend, a Maori charged with the murder of the Rev. Mr. Hamlyn,]'
