WAIKATO ELECTION

Declaration of the result of polling for a Representative for Waikato, at the Courthouse, Cambridge. At 4 p.m., ou Tuesday, the Returning Officer (W. H. Northcroft, Esq.) arrived m Cambridge, and having cheched the votes, Avith the three scrutineers, ho declared the following as the result of the election : — Campbell. Whyte. Mercer .. .. 23 . . 29 Taupiri . . „ 24 . . 27 Hamilton ... *.. 27 .. 123 Cambridge . . . . 108 . . 27 Morrinsville . . . . 1 . . 9 Total 128 .. 215 Majority for "Whyte, 32. The difference between this rosulfc and that before noticed, is be accounted for by the facfc that oup Moari voted at two places; both his votes, therefore, were informal. Tho Returning Officer, therefore, declared Mr John Blair Whyte duly elected, and asked the electors present fco listen fairly aud impartially to any " remarks fcho successful candidate and the defeated one would make. ] Mr Whyte then came forward, and ( thanked the electors who had put him afc the head of the poll. Ho also thanked ] tho opponent for tho fair and honourable way m which the electiou had beeu carried ] ou. Ho also thanked those who had voted against him, as they had shown that Mr Campbell was worthy of confidence. Hu now asked Mr Campbell and fche a other electors to. give him such advice as [ would enable him to work for the good of tlr-- Avhole district. 1 Mr Campbell then came forward, and v said, although he was the? defeated candi- 1

date, ho was not ashamed. Indeed, ho I thought it a matter to bo proud of , that after being iv Cambridgo nine years, he had been supported by 108 out of 135 electors. He had carried on his part m the election, with ,ill fairness, and ho believed it had been the desire of his supporters to do so. He thanked fche electors who had voted for him, and stated that ho sliould contest this scatj for tho Houso of Roprosentativa., whonovor it was vacant. Ho called for a vofo of thanks for the Returning Officer, which was cordially given. Three cheers were .success! veil v called for Mr Whyte, Mr Campbell and tho Returning Officer 1 ., when tho elector dispersed. •
