LATEST FROM THE PROVINCES
Br the arrival of tho s.s. Lord Ashley and Wellington we have later news from Auckland, Hawke'a Bay, Canterbury, and Otago, of which the following is a summary. AUCKLAND. Our files are to the 4lh inst. Sill GEOHGE t'RKY AT TAUItANGA. I Thi; Sont.hci'n Cross of the 80th ult suys : — The news of Sir (reorge Grey's interview with the natives at Tauranga, and the return of Colonel Lyons I'rom Opotiki, reach us at the same Lime. JJoth facts are full of significance, and in both cases the signitteance is a pleasant one. The Tauranga natives linvo shown, that they were certainly no better than their neighbors, by their evident desire to circumvent us, after our overgenerous treatment of them when they were wholly iii our power. They have shown also, liow.vcr, that they were no woive, by yielding at once to firm treatment, properly applied. That their intention was to cheat ua out of the 50,000 acres of land which, with their full acquiescence, were confiscated, there can be no reasonable question.
