CANTERBUEY.
(From the " Press," August 20.) In addition to the dull state of the grain trade at this time of the year, the late decline in prices in almost all kinds of grain are not readily submitted to by farmers, consequently little or no business has been done this last week. Wheat and flour is still difficult to quit at the reduction previously quoted. Oata are Almost unsaleable, unless at at considerable reduction, with the exception of good seed ' samples, which are scarce, there is hardly any demand, and prices may be quoted threepence lower for Inferior lots. Mr W. D. Barnard -reports that the horsa market waa moderately well supplied to-day; the constant wet weather keeps the prices of all kinds of horses loir. Doling the last week there has been a pretty brisk demand for useful upstanding heavy pack horsea. The sale was very numerously attended, and, on th« whole, prices obtained were satisfactory, considering the state of the money market The following are the quotations : — First dais draught stock, none offering; medium do, £45 to £65 ; inferior do, £30 to £40 ; first class hacks in good demand, none In market ; medium hacks and light harness horses, £20 to £30; young useful packers, from £25 to £30; inferior hacks and light hurness horses, £15 to £20. " The steeplechase mare Jessie, realised £56 ; and ons entire, two year old colt, by Westminister, £40. One cow and calf, £18. At the sale held by Messrs Burnell, Bennett, and Sprot, at their Yards, at Jliccarton, on Thursday last, there wer« upwards of 80 head of cattle disposed of. Taken as a> whole, they were nearly as bad a lot of cattle as we have seen yarded. The attendance was small, bnt consisted of buyers, and the prices obtained were from £10 10b to £4 4a for a few very Inferior. A lot of Leicester and Southdown croßß-bred rams were offered, but there were no buyers for that class of stock, otherwise they were well worthy of attention, and will prove very useful to the province.
