LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

Thk Town Belt.- We call attention to a notice issued by the Government relative to squatting on the Town Bell. All such squatting was always known to be illegal ; but no steps have been taken to prevent it in consequence of tbe non-issue of a Crown Grant, vesting tbe Bolt i'J any particular authority. We understand that a Crown Grant has been recently issued by tbe Governor in favour of the Superintendent; hence, the notice referred to.

DA.NOEROUS State or Swincoubne's Wharf. —The state of Swinbourne's Wharf is now so dangerous as absolutely to imperil the lives o persons walking upon it. The attention of the proprietor hus been called by the Government to tbe necessity for closing or repairing it, and meanwhile it is po?ted up as " Dangerous " We caution the public against running a risk by making use of it, and are happy to bear that sieps have been take:; to warn tbe coasting steamers from making fast alongside.

To-Monnow, — We have been requested to remind our readers that to-morrow (Wednesday) is the Hutt M'irket D.iy. To-morrow evening Judge Johnston will deliver an Inaugural Lecture at the Athenaeum, as advertised.

McCoy's Case. — Notwithstanding Mr. Fer-varc-l dismissed tins case the oilier day, McCoy has been apprekein'el !»nd lodged in gaol under v warrant by Mr. Wardell, who is just now acting for Mr. Ferrard. The information is filed under a previous act, and we may hope that the kihls of justice will yet he answered — that the case will be dealt with on its merits, and not allowed to fall through merely from the laches of the late Government. It is due alike to McCoy and the well being of society that so serious a charge as that of spiling anus to a native should bo thoroughly investigated. The hearing will take place on Saturday.

Death 3by Duowniio, — A melancholj accident oecutred on Saturday afternoou, resultingin the death of two persons by drowning. Mr. Macmanamin, his daughter, and bis mother iu-law, Mrs. Wilkins, were going off in a bout to the schooner Tyne, when on Hearing that vessel, a squall struck the boat, she went over, and all. in her were immersed in the water. The accident being observed from the ( Earl of Mar and Keilie, a boat was instantly lowered, and sent to their assistance. The Tyne also despatched a. boat. Mr. Maomanamin and Mrs. Wilkins were picked up by the Earl of Mar Kcllies boat and conveyed immediately on shove. They were taken to the Custom house, where every means where adopted to restore animation by Mr.- Carkcek, Dr. Williams, and otbergentlemen present. They were afterwards removed to Mclntosh's New Zcalander Hotel, when Drs. Kebbell, Johnston, Taylor, and others exerted themselves to the utmost to restore animation ; but we regret lo state, without effect. Mrs. Wilkins partially rallied ;■ but ultimately died from exhaustion. The girl and tbe boatmen were picked up and saved. A. 1 ) inquest was held on tbe bodies, a report of which will be found in another column. Mr. Macmanamin w-is one ofour earliest settlers, be' was highly respected by all vvbo knew him, and his death is deeply regretted by a large circle of friends. Royal Lyceum Theatre. — The performance announced for Monday Evening last, were postponed until Saturday next, in consequence of the melancholy accident by drowning.
