WAIHI EXTENDED MINE VISIT OF DIRECTORS THE DRIVING ON THE REEF GOOD OPENING UP Ykstkday Messrs, Ed, Barker ami W Bailoy, direetors o( tho Wriilii Extomlod Goldmining Company, visited Waihi. A' Telhorapu roprosontativo accompanied tho party (which also inctadod Mr. G, W. Brimblecombo, of Auckland) to tho mine, and inspected tho 184oet roof and other workings at tho 500 foot lovol. On tho occasion of our roprosontativo's last visit they wero driving ou past tho footwall of tho roof. In tho in" torval, after continuing tho drive for about 13 foot beyond tho iootwall, this work, had been stopped and tho men put on to drivo on tho reef at tho hanging wall portion of tho roof towards tho Grand Junction mine, and on tho footwall in tho opposito direction. i\\ tliis latter point tlio roof looks oxceodinglv well. Practically the whole face fur a width of fivo or six foot is composed of favourable looking suiphiJo ore, heavily charged with mineral. In tho faco overhead is a do?p fissure, or vug, running up from throo to four feet, At tho momont of our visit no work was going on at this point, and tho distauco driveu on tho roefhero would bo about throo foot. Tho drive on the roof in tho opposito sido, going in the direction of lhn Grand Junction was being oporatod, aud had beon drivon for a distanco of about 6 feet. After procscding a few feet further it is tho intention of the managor, wo understand, to put a small rise of fow feet up in ordor to bting thorn on tho same level with tho No. 2 lovol of the Grand Junction, which is being driven towards tho boundary lino of tho two properties It is estimated that tho intorvoningspneo botwoen tho face of tho drivo in tho.Junction and the workings in tho Extended is scarcely 40 foot. Tho directors, boforo loaving tho lovol, seemed samples of stono takon from tho vicinity of tho footwall. The oro takon from tho reef is being storod at tl - o end of tho drive. Tho nortliMvost crosscut was also visited.

Asked as to whether auy assays had neon taken of tho reef sinco tbo first assays wero published, Mr Barker said they had had check assays from tho portion of tho reof which had already beon assayed. Thoy had not taken assays of tho roef near tho footwall, but thoy in tended dome so now, and tho stone thoy had got from the reef that afternoon thoy were taking with them to Auckland to bo assayed, and the result would bo published.

In furthor discussion on the question ot assays, Mr Barker slated that fresh assays had beon rnado from stone takon from two small leadorj in tho north-west cross-cut, and tho reason for assaying this stono, both Mr. Barker and Mr. Bailey explained, was to ascertain for themselves if thoro was any truth in tbo report that private assays made somo time ago of stone takon from these leaders, gavo a valuo of over 120, Mr, Johns, mino manager, on his last visit to Auckland, took with him samplos from these loaders.

At No. 4 lovol tho east drive from No. 1 shaft, N,W, crosscut, is in 277 feet, About livo foot of sulphide oro is oxposod. Tho Boyal lode at No, 5 lovol in the eastern ond is tlireo foot wide, with 110 walls visible, Tlio ovorago value nor ton is—gold Uilwls 20grs, silver loz lldwts 14grs. Tho Martha lodo at this lovel in tho ,lovo pass shows !j feet of sulphide oro, the average value lining—gold loz 4 dwts llgrs, uiul silvor 2loz (idwts lOgrs, At No, 0 lovel. north section, tho Martha lodo in tho Juno pass shows a value of—gold 12dwts, silver loz 19dwts sgrs por ton; in tho Manning pass tho valuo is—gold 2oz (idwts lgr, silyor 4oz -Idwts 17grs por ton; Longson pass-gold 14dwts22grs silvor, loz liidwts Hgrs por ton, Leo puss fcold, lldwts Sgrs, silvor 4oz Bdivts 22grs por ton.
