At the inquiry into the Aramac disaster, Captain Butcher stated that he could only attribute the disaster to some phenomenal current having affected the vessel while steering westward, setting her on to the end of the Spit. Ho admitted that the officer on the bridge should have seen the Spit earlier than he did.
