NAPIER, January 10. Fine weather prevails for the opening of the cricket mateh — Englishmen v. Hawke's Bay, — but a strong westerly wind makes play somewhat unpleasant. Tho wicket is a beautiful one,* and very fast. Hawke's Bay bat fifteen, but only field eleven. Stanning stands out of the English team.
Hawke's Bay won the toss, and batted first, Youn# and Lusk opening to the bowling of Hargreaves and Burnup. Young's life was a short ono, being taught by Fano at deep. slip. 8 — 1 — 0.
