POLITICAL NOTES.
(By Our Parliamentary Special ) ' ■~~ ' (By Telegraph). WELLINGTON, September 20. Dealing with what' now is the Joint Committee inquiring into the allegations of malpractice m connection with tho dredging companies, the Times this morning says that "a great mass of the evidence has been laid before the Committee, much of it of a damnatory character, and not improbably the result will be the institution of prose"rations against the more flagrant, offenders." In a fortnight, it is said, •the report will be ready. It ~is interesting to learn that the Committee computes that the capital invested in dredging in New Zealand is, equal to £3 per head of the population, a great deal of which is in bad odour on account of a few "wild cats." It is probable, I hear, that the Licensing Bill will make the now compulsory magisterial power of the endorsement of licenses discretionary, a change asked for by both sides. -There is not a chance of the Public 'Works Statement being brought down, as I am at present informed, for a fortwght. ________
