LONDON. September 20.
In connection with the disaster at Tarkastod, General French reports that Commandant South, in order to break the cordon hemming him in, rushed a squadron of the 17th Lancers at Elands River Poort, west of Tarkastod, killing I three officers and 20 mcli, and wounding Major Victor Sandeman and 30 men. I The squadron fought most gallantly, inflicting heavy loss on the Boors, who were clad in' khaki and were at first mistaken for British 'columns, who were closely .pursuing the cordon breaker 8. r South' recently succeeded Kruitzingerk, who is in disfavour with De Wet. In the Utrecht affair, besides the killed and wounded, five officers, including Gough and another who escaped, were amongst the captured. The number of captured is not stated.
