In connection with the disaster at Tarkastod, General French reports that Commandant South, in order to break the cordon hemming him in, rushed a squadron of the 17th Lancers at Elands River Poort, west of Tarkastod, killing I three officers and 20 mcli, and wounding Major Victor Sandeman and 30 men.
