FOOTBALL.

Senior and Junior Cap Fixtures

Notes by " Goal-Post."

As anticipated, tho Wanganui-Turakina match played lost Saturday was really aM, battle between the forward divisions. The*' day and ground was of such a nature as to almost prohibit the baoks from having their share of tho play. The town team, who as a rule generally play a somewhat indifferent game on a greasy ground, were plioid at a disadvantage, as a bad ground ii^coß. ' sidered a country team's delight. The Wangannis have had really bad luck while contending on the Turakioa ground, and if I remember rightly not a game have they placed to their credit, bat now that they have made a draw I hope their luok will be reversed. The team speak in anything bat glowing terms of the ovals used' at Turakina, the balls used hiving seen the better portion of their days and were far from airtight. The difficulty was overcome by uiiog the balls alternated — while one was being played with, the other was refreshed by a little more puff.

The matches pUyed on the Beoreation Ground were far from scientific, but ai in the case of the other match this outcome ■was dun to the unfavorable weather. The Fordell t«am were again unfortunate, thii time having to forfeit to the Oastleoliff*. Those who did roll up, however, were determined to have a game, and on the whole played very well; with a fall team ther would giro most of the Junior fifteens a a lot of trouble. The Freezers playod np to average form, bot soemed to think that > as the match had been declared a walk over they had no occasion to exert them, selves and played accordingly. The Wangonni II v Turakina II was a more interesting gamo than the former, chiefly owing to the fact that the blues wore to make their first uppetranee, and, ai they looked a strong, heavy lot, their ohances were considered to bebrighfcv The reds deserve credit for their win/which* was quite unexpected when the teamt faced each other The Turakinai hsd » big pnll over their opponents as to weight, but in a majority of cases the pi«,yers did not know how to U3O it to advantage. The blues threequarters fMaoris) werortiffionlttoitop when once they had full swing on, and they proved a regular armful to a majority of the reds who professed their affection in that manner. Three oup matohes aro to ba played to- ' morrow. For the Senior Oup, the Waverleya and Koioraus will try conclusions. on tha ground of the former. This matokshonjd, undoubtedly, prove interesting 'and ''be evenly contested. Thn Waverliy team, although having lost one or two old identities, will have a big say for the Oup, ana, having their own ground for this contest, should make things hum, but if the Kuieraus will only pass out. I rather fanoy their chances.

On the Recreation gronnd, the Fordcll ' and Wanganui Second Bport their ooloura for the Junior Cup. 801 l up, Fordell, if yon are to be beaten, let it be upon your merits, and although your record shows tyro looses, your ohance for tho Cop is sot: at nil impossible. _ Tho Wangannis hare improved somewhat since the commencement of the season, and I trust they will continue to do so. The Oaatleoliffs will journey to Tnrakina to meet the second fifteen there. Both fifteens contain a sturdy set of players, and a rattling game should ba witnessed". If the Freezers can take a fair back division, my advice would bo to make the game aa loose and fast at possible, whioh, aided with fast following up, will most probably be 1 to their advantage. ,

Accidents onf. football ground in proportion to the number of players an few in number! and seldom serious results ooonr. '" The players had a day out at Hunterrille last Saturday, for while the Ke K»hs and Hunterville teams were playing, one of the latter had the misfortune to collide with ' and opponent and break his leg, | wn jlo another player had one of his ribs broksn. I hear that the Kaiorau Club bave forwarded a framed photo of tha Senior Cup winners of lost season, to the Rev. Mr Dewsbury, Ohristohoreh, at a slight token of their esteem and respect. It will ba remembered that that gentleman wat one of Vice-Presidenti of the Kaieraas.

Hints to players. Forwards— Drop tho ball directly jou are held. Ditto on the line-out unless passing to the wings' • c»n be introduced. Form up in three ranks, and link to-gether in the errams. If opposing, heel the bill out, still taking care to hold the scrum up. If defending, obtain pouet • sion of the ball, and screw the sorutn in the) direction cf nearest touoh-line. -Should you over-run the 'boll either in a rush or in a scrum, at once drop to ths rear, ani again take up the running. ;and be ready if your comrade does likewiie. Don't stand and wait for the ball, it' may never, come, and suppose it did you would be off-side ; aim at combination j back players, do not let the ball bounce if you can possibly help it j should a forward rush, pen your opponents down, and follow up Tery oloselv ,- do not ton book when passing, too much time lost, but turn smartly en your heel and ouk with, it • when on the run pass with two hands -' muoh safer ; afte* passing, should book up for o repais ; kiok high if opposing, don't hesitate ; mark if within the 25 lino ; baok your oomrade up when he is about to collar an opponent ; oven if he fails, he stops most of the steam, and can then be easily grossed ; do not attempt to pot if you have full weigh on ; in baoking a comrade up, do not get directly behind him, but run. almost in line, and well on the wing; pats before you are collaredj so that you can get; a ropass directly after if necessary. Above all things work in conjunction with tbs forwards.
