Jan 8. The trial of Waring Taylor will commence On Saturday. A prize of £5 each is offered by the Government for the best design for a medal and certificate for the Industrial Exhibition, Designs are to be sent in on or before February 14. A conference of adjutants and officers commanding th.c several Volunteer districts in the colony met this afternoon at the Govern', ment Buildings, and it is expected their sitting will extend over a week. The conference, which has been appointed at the instance of the Defence Department, comprises the following officers : — Majors Stapp, Wanganui j Butts, Wellington and Napier ; aud Shepherd, Auckland ; and Cap.taius Webb, Nelson and Westland ; Newell, Canterbury ; and Gordon, Otago and Southlaud. The object of the conference is to suggest amendments in the Volunteer Act and Volunteer regulations, in order to make the latter conform as nearly as possible. At present some of the regulations are ultra vires, and it is considered very desirable for the proper working of the force that amendments should be effected in them as well as m the act under which they are framed. The ship Opawa, Captain Mathers, 92 days out from London, arrived to-day.

The cripket match, Aucklanrt v, Wellington, was commenced this morning. Auckland won the toss, and went in, scoring 224 in their first innings. The highest scorers were —Barton, 83 ; Robinson, 36 ; and Coxon 30. The Wellingtonians in their first innings have lost eight wickets for 124 runs. A. Blacklock, 51. and Nicholls, 32, were the highest scorers. Jan 9. At the cricket match, Auckland and Wellington, the weather is dull and showery. Wellington are all out for 145, and Auckland have gone in again, and so far have lost four wickets for 76 runs.
