OTAKI.

FROM OTTB, OWN CORRESPONDENT.

May sth. In connection with the case of cattle-steal-ing, which I communicated to you sometime ago, the two men, Henry Hopkins and John Gittins, have again been remanded, and are in the custody of the local police. .Owiug to the continuous efforts of our guardian of the peace, evidence has been found sufficient to sustain a conviction, in the discovery of the hide (br-anded) of the stolen steer, buried in the bush, and the head carefully placed between the fork of a tree. I have not been able to ascertain to whom the beast belonged. : On the 19th April the Church of England had its Sunday School treat. The children met in the large grounds of the Native College for games, races, &c, at 2 o'clock, and passed a most enjoyable afternoon. Tea was provided for them in the College, to which no les^ than 61 children sat down. Afterwards Mr McWilliam showed his Magic Lantern, and if screams of laughter go for anything, it must have been thoroughly enjoyed. I thought at the time of a certain celebrated Magic Lantern belonging to an inhabitant of Wanganui, and what an immense treat it would be*if the children could see it. Mrs McWilliam distributed some prizes, after which the children sung a song with good effect and theu separated, having given cheers to Mr and Mrs McWilliam, who had taken the onus of the whole affair.

We are to have a Concert on the 12th inst., I believe. It is to consist of readings, part songs, and solos, and is under the sole management of Mr Simcox, our J.P. These Concerts are to be held monthly during the winter months, and will serve to put a little life into the place.
