EXPLORING THE SAHARA.
ANNIHILATION OF AN EXPEDITION BY NATIVES. (PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Algiers, April 2. Four natives belonging to Colonel Flathois' mission, engaged in exploring for the TransSahara railway, arrived at Onangari on Monday last, bringing details of the almost complete annihilation of the expedition by natives. They report that the mission was surprised, and Colonel Flathois and nearly all his followers killed. One of the members of the expeditition, named Dinions, with an officer named Poliquin and 61 men, escaped, but were subsequently overtaken by another tribe, who declared that they had no share in the massacre. This tribe offered the fugitives some dates, but it was found that the fruit was poisoned, and Dinions and 38 men died after partaking of it. Poliquin with 30 men continued the retreat, but were surrounded by hostile tribes. Poliquin then despatched, as above mentioned, four natives to Onangarai. On their arrival succor was immediately despatched to the remnant of the expedition. Little hope, however, is entertained of their relief, as when the messengers left them they were closely beset by the natives, and ill supplied with food and ammunition.
