PATEA. A,

(From a correspondent.) April 26th, 1876.

Mr Clapcott lectured in the Town Hall last night but the weather being wet and boisterous, deterred many from going — as it was, the Hall was. nearly half full. If Mr Olapcotl's success in gaining insurers is proportionate to his energetic attempt ;ui:l the general favorable impression created, by his lectures he is very likely to take away with him, from this district, a plentiful reward. The I'ongarir.o arrived in harbour be r tween 9 a>id 10 o'clock yesterday moi:n t ing with a. good cargo of general goods, a list of "which I end ise. She sailed this morning at the same hour with a return cargo, mainly of wool and grass seed.

Parties wishing to purchase sections in Carlylo will have an opportunity of doing so on the 6fch proximo, when Mr Cowern will hold an auction sale of the Town Reserves comprising 1 ! 9 allotments, after which he intends holding a sale of general g.>ods. A number of Natives from Haw era side were in waiting for the arrival of the coach to-day having some expectation that the three Wairoa natives, Tapa, Spain, and Kuri Tanga would arrive by her. • They went away immediately after the coach arrived.

The machinery and boiler of the steamer Egmont have been removed from her to-day. The heavy winds with to-night's tide will give her as great a trial as she will be likely to have, and should to-mor-row s?e her without further injury, it is very probable that she may yet be got off, and be some indemnification for the expenses incurred in the other trials. I am sorry to learn that Mr Coutts has had the misfortune to have had part of the dam of hi 3 mill at Kakaramea carried away. This will no doubt be rather trying to his patience, particularly as he is now prepared to start grinding. Ho will now be compelled to wait until such time as the dam is repaired, the contract for which is out, and will be completed with as much despatch as possible.

Tho Carlyle Court is undergoing a reprieve in respect of duty since the last criminal cases held here, the only cases since heard being — P. A. Marchant v. H. I. Davis for £1 ]03, and McGuire v. T. B. Gil pin for £2 0s Gd, both of which wore settled, one case of F. McCarthy r. Ernest Van for £1 6s was adjourned until Thursday.
