THE REDUCTIONS IN THE GAOL DEPARTMENT.

Mr Reid waited on the Minister of Justice respecting the disproportionate reductions ia tho Gaol Department of the Civil Service. He comphiued of the unfairness ia reductions made in the cases of the overseer and chief warder of the Hokitika Gaol, from £200 to £150, and £174 to £135 respectively, after twelve years of faithful and exemplary service. He also hoped the Minister would reconsider the paltry allowance proposed by the Estimate?, to be give a to the matron. The Miuister took a note of the circumstances as represented, but said the reductions were general throughout the wholo department. Officers in Timaru and other similar gaols, suffered in a liko manner. This curse had boon taken on the recommendation of) the Inspector of Gaols, and the officers were now classified. The Minister concluded by sayinj that though there was a temporary reduction ia the cases of the two officers referred to, they stood well on the list for promotion when vacancies occurred. When the estimates come on attention will again be directed to the matter. Other members are dissatisfied, in like mtnuer, with the reductions made in their district gaols.
